In a world filled with stress, competition, pressure to succeed, and the temptation to appear perfect, being honest can sometimes feel like a heavy burden. But the question is; why should we still choose to be honest? What makes honesty so important that all religions, cultures, and moral systems hold it as a core value?
The first, honesty preserves one’s integrity. When someone speaks the truth even if it is unpleasant, they are building the foundation of their character. An honest person does not need to hide behind lies or create a false image to be accepted. They live with peace of mind, because they have nothing to hide. Meanwhile, lies actually weaken a person. Every lie must be covered up with another lie, until the heart becomes restless and the mind loses its peace.
For the second, honesty builds trust. In family, friendships, education, the professional world, and leadership, trust is the foundation that makes relationships strong and enduring. People may not always like the bitter truth, but they still respect and trust those who are honest. Conversely, once trust is broken, rebuilding it is far more difficult than maintaining it from the start.
Third, honesty offers long term benefits, even though it may seem costly at first. Lies often appear to be a shortcut, but they ultimately lead to bigger problems. Honest people may face temporary difficulties but they will earn respect, a good reputation, and peace of mind. There is a wise saying: The truth may hurt for a moment, but a lie hurts forever.
From a spiritual perspective, honesty is a commandment and an act of obedience to Allah. In Islam, honesty (Sidq) is a noble trait inherent in the Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu Alaihi Wasalam. A hadist states: “Indeed, honesty leads to goodness, and goodness leads to paradise.” In fact, Allah commands the believers to always associate with honest people, for honesty purifies the heart and guides humanity toward the path of truth.
Fourth, honesty builds a better future. A society cannot be built on lies. Dishonesty undermines justice, erodes trust, and causes chaos. However, when every individual in society upholds honesty, a fair, safe, and trusting environment is created.
In the end, we must be honest not because honesty is always easy, but because honesty makes us whole. Honesty is the courage to be ourselves, without masks and without fear. It makes life feel lighter, relationships closer, and our hearts more at peace. Written by [] Rosi Daruniah.
