The Story of Prophet Yusya, the Prophet Who Held Back the Sunset

Almuhtada.org – Yusya bin Nun is Prophet Musa’s student, who accompanied him to look for knowledge. He was sent by Allah as a Prophet to continue the mission of Prophet Musa among Bani Israel.

The name of Prophet Yusya itself isn’t included of 25 prophets listed in the Quran. But Allah gave him a miracle, so that he is known as the prophet who held back the sunset.

The story of Prophet Yusya was told by the Prophet Muhammad. He said, “Indeed, the sun was never held back for any human being, except for Prophet Yusya on the day he traveled to Baitul Maqdis (for jihad).” (HR. Ahmad in Al-Musnad from Abu Hurairah)

So, what is the story of Prophet Yusya?

After Prophet Musa passed away, Prophet Yusya brought the Bani Israel out of the desert.  They walked across Jordan river until they arrive at Jerica City.

Prophet Yusya and the Bani Israel who followed him wanted to destroy the city. They then surrounded the city of Jerica for six months.

One day, Prophet Yusya and his followers agreed to attack indside. Along with the sound of trumpets and Takbirs and a powerful spirit of togetherness, they managed to break down the fence and enter the city.

There, they took the loot and also killed twelve thousand men and women. They also defeated eleven kings and other kings who ruled in Syam.

Until on Friday, the war didn’t ended. The sun almost set, It means Saturday will come. Even though, in the syariahwar isn’t allowed to do on Saturday. Because of that, Prophet Yusya said:

“O sun, you are only following Allah’s orders, and so am I. I worship following His orders. I worship following His orders. O Allah, hold back the sun for me so that it does not set first.”

The prayer of Prophet Yusya was immediately answered by Allah SWT. Allah kept the sun from setting and ordered the moon not to reveal itself until Prophet Yusya and his followers had defeated the city of Jerica. By Allah’s permission, the war was won by Prophet Yusya.

After taking control of Baitul Maqdis, Prophet Yusya ordered his followers to collect the loot of war to be burned. However, the fire did not want to burn it because some of the Bani Israel betrayed by hiding gold.

The traitors were then ordered to return the loot they had stolen and gather it with the other loot. After that, the fire was lit and burned all the loot.

Under the rule of the Bani Israel, the people of Bayt al-Maqdis returned to their faith in Allah. Prophet Yusya ordered them with the Torah until he died at the age of 127. [] Fahdina Dean Yustisia
