Almuuhtada.org – In Islam, there are many behaviors that should be avoided in daily life.
One of the behaviors that should be avoided and is considered a sin is ujub.
Ujub is a disgraceful behavior that Muslims should avoid. A Muslim must avoid this behavior.
The Meaning of Ujub in Islam
Quoted from the book Adakah Berhala pada Diri Kita (Are There Idols Within Us) by Majdi Hilali, ujub is when someone views themselves with pride for what they know and what they have done.
Al-Muhasibi defines ujub as praising themselves for what they have done or know, and forgetting that these gifts come from Allah SWT.
From the definitions above, it can be concluded that ujub is the behavior of praising oneself or showing off.
Ujub is a Disgraceful Trait
Islam teaches the importance of humility, modesty, and respect for others.
These behaviors are in contrast to ujub, which tends to make someone feel superior or better than others.
Here are some reasons why ujub is considered a despicable trait in Islam:
– It is a terrible disease because it wipes out the blessings of Allah SWT.
Ujub tries to influence people from doing good deeds, whether in words or actions.
Then it exaggerates it to the point of forgetting Allah SWT who has given the blessings.
– Loss of humility
Quoted from the book Five Destroyers of Faith 5 by Dimitri Mahayana, ujub will cause a person to lose their humility and feel that they are more important than they actually are.
– A disease that will be disliked by Allah SWT
Quoted from the book “Akhlak Madzmumah dan Cara Pencegahannya” by Rik Suhadi, Allah SWT will disapprove of His people for considering themselves better and purer than others.
Allah SWT says in Surah An-Najm verse 32,
Meaning:
“(They are) people who avoid major sins and evil deeds. However, they (do) commit minor sins. Indeed, your Lord is Most Forgiving. He knows you best since He created you from the earth and when you were still a womb in your mother’s womb. So, do not consider yourselves pure. He knows best who is righteous.”
How to Avoid Ujub in Islam
Avoiding ujub is very important in Islam.
Quoted from the book Menjadi Bijak dan Bijaksana 4 (Becoming Wise and Prudent 4) by Ibnu Basyar, there are several steps that can be taken to avoid this trait:
– Increase your remembrance of Allah SWT and ask for His forgiveness so that there is no more neglect and ujub within yourself
– Get used to reflecting on yourself every day, which can be done before going to sleep
Additionally, a Muslim can also do the following things to avoid arrogance:
– Always remember the blessings of Allah SWT
– Always be grateful to Allah SWT
– Be humble
– Always do good to fellow human beings
That is the meaning of ujub in Islam, a disgraceful trait that Muslims must avoid. May we, as Muslims, be able to avoid this disgraceful trait of ujub. Aamiin. [] Fahdina Dean Yustisia
