Almuhtada.org – Nabi Sham’un Al-Ghazi is one of the prophets sent by Allah SWT to earth, especially to the Children of Israel. Although the name of the Prophet Sham’un is not included in the 25 prophets who must be believed, but he should still be known by Muslims, it is even mentioned that he is the background of the night of Lailatul Qadar. Check out the full story of Prophet Sham’un below.

Who is the Prophet Sham’un Al-Ghazi?

Prophet Sham’un is a prophet who came from the Children of Israel and was sent by Allah SWT in Roman land. The Prophet Sham’un was a long-haired hero who had a sword-like weapon made from the jawbone of a camel.

Quoting the book 99 Intellectual Satisfiers and Teenage Faith by Wulan Mulya Pratiwi, one day the Prophet Muhammad SAW gathered with the friends during the holy month of Ramadan. Rasulullah SAW suddenly smiled by himself, and the friends asked what made Rasulullah SAW smile, he replied,

“It was shown to me on the last day, when all humans were gathered in the Padang Masyar, there was a prophet who carried a sword and did not have a single follower, entering heaven, he was Sham’un.”

Prophet Sham’un was known as a courageous hero. He was blessed with the miracle of softening iron and tearing down palaces.

He was able to kill the enemies of the disbelievers by himself. Thousands of disbelievers have successfully knocked out alone and of course with the permission of Allah SWT.

Ibn Abbas RA from Rasulullah SAW confirmed, “That the angel Jibril narrated the story of a former person named Sham’un Al-Ghazi to the Prophet SAW. He had fought against the disbelievers for 1000 years, armed only with camel beard hair. Even though he only used camel’s beard hair, when he swiped it at the disbelievers, countless of them were killed. If he felt thirsty, Sham’un would simply drink the fresh water that came out from between his jaws, and if he was hungry, flesh grew from his body, and he ate it.”

This power of Prophet Sha’um Al-Ghazi is also the background of the revealing of the night of Lailatul Qadr, which is also the asbabun nuzul of surah Al-Qadr.

The Story of the Prophet Sham’un Al-Ghazi in the Background of Lailatul Qadar

Narrated in the book Hikayat Kearifan by Bahrudin Achmad, that the situation of Sham’un in the war in the way of Allah SWT was able to survive every day throughout his 1000 months or 83 years and 4 months.

The disbelieving enemies were helpless in the face of Sham’un’s attack. So, they tried to persuade Sham’un’s wife to trap him.

“We will reward you with some treasures if you can kill your husband,” said those who tried to persuade Sham’un’s wife.

“I am a woman, how can I kill him?” replied Sham’un’s wife.

“We will give you a strong rope (mine), tie your husband’s feet and hands while he is sleeping, then after that we will kill him,” they said.

So she tied him while he was asleep, and when he woke up, he was surprised. Sham’un said, “Who tied me with this rope (mine)?”

“I tied you up just to test the extent of your strength,” replied Sham’un’s wife. Then Sham’un immediately pulled his hand and the rope was immediately cut.

After that, the disbelieving enemies again brought Sham’un’s wife an iron chain, then when Sham’un fell asleep, his wife again tied Sham’un with the iron chain, when Sham’un woke up, he again asked, “Who tied me with this iron chain?”

“I tied you, just to find out the extent of your strength,” his wife replied again. Then, Sham’un pulled the iron chain, and the iron chain was broken.

Finally, Sham’un said to his wife, “O my wife, I am a guardian of Allah from the many Waliyullah on this earth, no one can defeat me in the affairs of the world, except for my long hair”.

His wife paid attention to everything he said. Then, when Sham’un fell asleep, his wife immediately cut eight pieces of his hair, the length of which fell to the ground, and began to tie his hands with four of his hair loops, and the other four loops were tied to his feet. When Sham’un woke up, he again asked, “Who tied me up?”

“I am just testing your strength,” his wife replied. Then, Sham’un pulled with all his might, but he was powerless to untie the knots.

Then, his wife immediately informed the disbelieving enemies, and they immediately came, and took Sham’un to the place of slaughter.

He was then tied to a pole, they began to torture him by cutting off his ears, poking out his eyes, lips, and cutting off his hands and feet, and all his disbelieving enemies gathered in the slaughterhouse.

Then Allah SWT gave him a revelation, “O Sham’un, what do you want? I will grant it, and will avenge them.” Sham’un replied, “O Allah, I only want You to give me strength, so that I can move the pillars of this house, and destroy them all.”

Then, Allah SWT gave him strength, and he was able to move his body, immediately the pillar was destroyed, and the house was destroyed, the roof fell on the disbelievers, all perished including his disbelieving wife.

Only Sham’un himself survived thanks to the help of Allah SWT, all his limbs returned to their original state. Sham’un also returned to worshiping Allah SWT for 1000 months, at night he prayed and during the day he fasted, and returned to fighting to take up arms in the way of Allah SWT.

In the book Quran Hadith by Asep BR, it is stated that, after hearing the story of Sham’un, the friends of the Prophet Muhammad SAW cried touched.

Then, Allah SWT revealed surah Al-Qadar through the angel Jibril, “O Muhammad, Allah SWT gives Lailatul Qadar to you and your people, worship on that night is better than worship 1,000 months”.

There is even one scholar who explains,

“Allah SWT exclaimed, ‘O Muhammad, praying 2 rak’ahs on Lailatul Qadr is better for you and your people than taking up arms / war in the days of the Children of Israel for 1,000 months’”. [] Fahdina Dean Y
